Haha ..... France.  How did you survive France? The little I remember of my short visit is these guys can get hot under the collar quite fast.
Like everywhere else, it's a mixed bag.. But, yes, there is a french 'temperament' that one can't escape noticing for sure!

Did you study IT?
Nope!...  It was exclusively in the Biosciences fields.. My interest in IT and Web technologies was a late comer and a guilty pleasure that I've nurtured on my own.

Great stuff @xdude.  Looks like a great deal with DirectAdmin loaded for free as well.  8)

@fitkoh great story.  I love stories like that.   :D

Haha!.. Reminds me of my nomadic years during my grad years in France :-) Hope you'll land -or better yet- you've landed safely in a place of your liking.  Some job opportunity I would guess? or is it just a desire to move somewhere less crowded in these times of lockdown?
Nope.  I'm still searching.  Simple case of more supply than demand.  Hopefully it will be sorted eventually.

So do I @fitkoh.  I've had issues both with moving, then not moving, and then as if in a conspiracy my internet service provider is creating huge problems.  I now have a backup service in place, but may have issues for some time yet.  My accommodation fell through and not so sure how long I can stay where I am and where next to move to.  All of it being thoroughly distracting.  Think I want to join @fChk on his farm and live in a tent.  :D

I totally forgot that a laptop can also be a server.  Must be fun for you to tinker with it.  I wouldn't have thought i3 would be good to use.  I always thought i3 was for "light use", i5 for heavier and i7 most useful.  Just shows you how little informed I am.
It's the software you install that ultimately dictate the role of a machine (server vs desktop/client) , not the hardware or the form-factor: I've used Pentium PCs running Fedora 32bit versions as servers for a decade.

Hi @fitkoh  Somehow I missed this discussion.  Not sure how that happened.

I'm always very interested in cpanel hosting.  Not sure whether this offer expired but am curious in the first instance where it fits in and how you managed to get it.  I don't think I've heard yet of a package deal that offers cpanel reseller for free.  That's a great deal for sure.  Did you get it with a hardware bundle purchase and where did you manage to get it from?

I'm on the DirectAdmin test at the moment.  Do you wish to continue the test, or can I move on to the cpanel reseller test.  I think I prefer cpanel, but if you think there's still some more to achieve with DirectAdmin I'll stay with DirectAdmin, or I could do both.  As you wish.  If cpanel works then I can move all of my Websites from DirectAdmin test to the cpanel reseller test.

Feel free to continue testing as you please. While the service is in light usage it would be helpful to try out as many things as possible.

The service is a resellers hosting package, probably similar to what's being used at freecloudhost.org, albeit a smaller package. Additional cpanel accounts are not free but I can get more at a rate of  $0.22 USD/year I believe.

Ah!.. It got two vCPUs with cpu64-rhel6 CPU model...  You should read this post of mine on Post4VPS -if you didn't read it already- to know why you should avoid that kind of CPU models!..

This is a very nice article you wrote! Although if used as a networked file server, I don't know how much those flags/cpu limitations  would impact performance. In theory all the tougher computational tasks could be performed on a better local server.

I've been wanting to try this provider for a while too. Geographically, this is the closest "low end" provider to my physical location.

Also cool is the story of how Little Creek got started - formerly a brick mason, he started hosting a few sites and eventually built a datacenter in  his basement and automating things and then finally rents space in a nearby datacenter.

@xdude would you be willing to share yabs?

@deanhills

I have bought a small package to test, from Lowendtalk.  A 4GB KVM for  3.50 usd.

https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/171105/starting-at-3-50-kvm-virtualizor-nvme-24-7-support

CPU Core: 4 (these are under fair use policy rather than dedicated)
RAM: 4 GB
NVMe: 80GB
Bandwidth: 2 TB/Month

The interesting thing is I even got DirectAdmin along with this one. He said he has fee copies left and I found one there. So far it's working fine and I have only had it for about 5 days. It's just a low-end server but I think it's pretty cool for 3.5 per month. It's a good place for me to learn and get used to Direct Admin root, reseller, and user panels. Maybe even to run few test sites since I no longer have any free VPS.

@xdude  Nice to see you around buddy.  I probably don't have to mention this as it's elementary knowledge but I'd check through offers at LowEndTalk as well.  What's nice there is guys usually review them at the same time and one can pretty much pick up when the offer is unsound.

I just found this 2020 review at LowEndTalk for RackNerd:
https://lowendbox.com/blog/lowendtalk-2020-best-providers-award-results/

and RackNerd VPS offers:
https://lowendbox.com/?s=racknerd+vps&searchsubmit=Find

I've learned from @fitkoh that anything with Ryzen in it is a good start for exploring a deal that is offered with it.

I found this at LET as well.  @fitkoh .... what do you think about the offer?

Looks like the spam bots are back - these ones are smart enough to make it past the email activation procedure. And rather than porn bots they seem to be advertising blogs: backlink bots. It'll take some time but I think I can get rid of most of these too. I'm seeing some patterns in the registration emails.
This is interesting as it correspondence with the spam wave as well as advertising blog type spam content at Gigarocket.  I've been using the spam purge tool quite a bit there.
